Syd is “Callin” with a new album

It’s been four years since Syd has released a studio album, but that will change soon.

Earlier this week, the frontwoman for the acid soul band The Internet announced a new album, Beard, will be released this summer.

“Beard is a coming-of-age album for me. It’s a snapshot of what my life looks like right now,” Syd said in a press release. “The title was inspired by the peach fuzz on my upper lip that society has always taught me to hate. I fell in love with my peach fuzz, and it made me rethink everything that was supposed to make me feel insecure. It allowed me to take my confidence into my own hands and own everything that I am and everything I love about myself, regardless of what anyone else thinks. The title also represents the way I see myself in relation to my peers, especially in music. ‘The bearded lady.’ Not so much a spectacle in my case, but an anomaly and an outlier. Hard to compare. I’m owning that, too. Taking things that were once insecurities and flipping them on their head has been extremely empowering.”

Beard will be Syd’s first album since 2022’s Broken Hearts Club and is scheduled to have contributions from Rodney Jerkins, Van Hunt, James Fauntleroy and Big Sean among others.

The lead single “Callin”, co-produced by Sid and NOVA WAV (and NW member Blu june also guests on the song), is a song where Syd is not at all interested in being in the streets. She hopes, through haze of various vices, that her love will eventually answer her calls. The song also features music legend Raphael Saadiq on bass.
