Prince called his shot – and succeeded – with Purple Rain

Prince was an established hitmaker thanks to 1982’s 1999, but a fictional biopic and companion album felt very audacious, especially when Michael Jackson was running the world with Thriller.

Never short on audacity or confidence, Prince soldiered on and made one of the 80s’ most memorable films (and movie soundtracks) Purple Rain.

As June 7th has been celebrated as “Prince Day” since his 2016 passing, Day 7 of our #BMM30 series is a discussion of Purple Rain in totality with our host/editor Chris Stevens and fellow Prince fan Evan Barnes, who covers the New York Giants for Newsday.
