Black Music Month continues to thrive thanks to Dyana Williams

Dyana Williams was there at the beginning.

With her then-partner, Philadelphia International Records leader Kenny Gamble, and several other luminaries in the Black Music Association, she laid the groundwork for what would become Black Music Month, as declared by then-President Jimmy Carter on June 7, 1979.

We had the honor of talking to Dyana for Day 8 of our #BMM30 series, in which she makes it clear that Black creativity makes the world go ’round.

“We have a flavor unlike any other human beings on the planet,” she said. “Black music and Black culture has permeated all of these places and spaces. Black music is connected to the culture and is prevalent.”
